The sealing lip is precision-molded from oil-resistant, highly elastic Nitrile Rubber (NBR/Buna-N) or a specialized polymer, often housed in a stamped steel case. Its primary function is to contain the lubricant within the crankcase while working with the wiper seal to isolate contaminants from the fluid end.
